Times they are a changing. Why? Because the the days of amateur hour Mrs. Dismal Sweatshirt Printing shop on the local corner of your favorite duty station just realized she might need to hire an artist verses peddling the “My Mommy Is A Soldier” cut and paste special design for Army unit shirts. Time for the mediocre crap to hit the streets. Not everyone has got the artists, printing ability, desire, or passion to serve our country’s finest with cutting edge military designs but now that new companies that specialize in this upper level desgin have finally serviced Mrs. Dismal can now go into retirement. Finally.
So having finally said that (and its true), our US Army soldiers and their units can now focus on getitng the finest in custom military unit design and receive shirts that are made with pride for those wearing them with pride and putting the best custom Army shirts on the best of our military. 2013 ushered in more of these better designs and thankfully Mrs. Dismal took a much needed 30 day block leave and never came back.

Comprised of two military branches, Army and Air Force, the National Guard, is certainly a reserve military force to be reckoned with. It’s state militia units are federally recognized as part of the United States’ armed forces, whether active or inactive. Citizen soldiers make up the National Guard, working civilian jobs part time and serving in the military part time as well.
Since its inception in 1636, the National Guard has been and will always be ready to mobilize its units for active duty to supplement regular armed forces during times of war or for national emergency as declared by Congress, the President or the Secretary of Defense.
National Guardsmen, Penn Station, New York City
There is claim that the National Guard is older than our nation itself, with over three and a half centuries of service. Our modern-day units that can are direct descendants from the Massachusetts Bay Colony Regiments formed 375 years ago, are the 101st Field Artillery Regiment, the 182nd Infantry Regiment, the 101st Engineer Battalion and the 181st Infantry.

It is also accredited with having served in the Mexican-American War, the beginning of the American Civil War and the Spanish-American War. During World War I, the National Guard made up to 40% of the U.S. combat divisions in France and 19 divisions in WWII.
More recently, we have seen our National Guard’s service men and women deploy to aid in Operation Desert Storm, with over 63,000 members mobilized. They were also there to assist with peace-keeping operations in places like Somalia, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bosnia and Kosovo as well as the handling of natural disasters (Hurricane Katrina), strikes, riots and other such massive events.
Guard’s men and women traditionally serve “One Weekend a Month, Two Weeks a Year” although certain units can serve more frequently depending on the demand of the task at hand. Pilots, navigators and aircrewmen are typical examples of those who are full time service members. A significant number of these also serve full time in AGR (Active Guard and Reserve) or ART (Air Reserve Technician or Army Reserve Technician).

U.S. NATIONAL GUARD
The oldest division of the United States’ Armed Forces, at 377 years this month, still remains an important part of our military since it’s inception in 1636. With the two sectors of the National Guard, the AIR National Guard and ARMY National Guard sharing the dual mission to protect life and property within the individual states of our great nation, as well as to protect the nation against opposing forces worldwide. The slogan, Always Ready, Always There, reminds us that the National Guard is there to protect and defend its nations people, leaders and land. Whether they’ve been deployed here in our own states or overseas, the National Guard IS Always Ready, Always There!!
The only branch required by the Constitution is different from the rest in that it answers to both state and federal governments. They are ready when needed and called upon to defend their state at home or the nation as a whole, overseas. As a reserve force, its members serve one weekend a month and a two week period a year after an initial 8-1/2 weeks of training. National Guard members serve a total of eight years or can serve a minimum of 3 years and then become a part of the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve). Their MOS (Military Occupational Specialty can range from aviation, infantry, religious and medical support. After initial training, soldiers move on to AIT (Advanced Individual Training) in their field of choice.
During colonial times, the soldiers of the National Guard were known as the militias, changing their name to National Guard in 1903. They became the official reserve force of the United States Army. Additionally, they were instrumental in winning the Revolutionary War, making up the majority of the troops. They also helped in the Mexican War, Civil War and the Spanish-American War and later World War I and II and the Cold and Vietnam and more recently in the Iraqi War as well as aiding in national disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the tragic 9-11 incident.
