As Quoted on the USS Remora website ~ These dolphins signify that the person wearing them has undergone a rigorous training that is unmatched. These are not given. They are earned. They represent an extensive amount of training on virtually every system on their submarine. After they have been earned, they are worn with pride and recognized world wide.

Submarine Quotes!

vswa056_navy_ohio_class“Some ships are designed to sink… others require our assistance.”

I’m not sure if we were the first submariners to come up with this quote, but it was the theme we had printed on t-shirts (along with a surface ship in the crosshairs of a periscope) for the first ever (Mediterranean) deployment of the “Mighty Monty” – USS Montpelier (SSN 765).

Nathan Zelk, former RM2(SS) USS Montpelier (SSN 765) August ’93 – October ‘97

As quoted on Wiki ~ These United States submarines were lost either to enemy action or to “storm or perils of the sea.”

During World War II
During World War II, the U.S. Navy’s submarine service suffered the highest casualty percentage of all the American armed forces, losing one in five submariners.

The Submarine Veterans of World War II suggested each of the fifty states of the United States “adopt” one submarine, except California and New York, which should adopt two.
